SHILLONG, May 1: The state government is verifying the claims made by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) about the presence of 148 illegal families in Harijan Colony out of the 342 listed for relocation,
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said he has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Shillong Municipal Board and the Director of Urban Affairs to verify the RTI information (obtained by HYC) that 148 of the 342 families of the Harijan Colony are illegal settlers.
The government has been claiming that there are 342 families whose members are employees of the SMB or the Urban Affairs Department.
Reacting to a query, Tynsong said the CEO of the Shillong Municipal Board and the Director of Urban Affairs will verify the matter and present details to the government, and if required, issue a clarification.
The state government is scheduled to meet representatives of the Harijan Panchayat Committee on May 7 to take the relocation issue forward.
The HYC had met the Deputy Chief Minister after RTI revealed that only 195 families have either a single or two members as employees of the board or other government departments, while other families had no employees in any department. They work in private firms or are religious or social workers and teachers.
