SHILLONG, May 17: Cabinet minister and senior BJP leader, Alexander L Hek on Friday dismissed speculations that the saffron party’s support to the ruling National People’s Party in the April 19 Lok Sabha election in the state had spoiled the show for the latter in both Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats. Most of the political parties and experts have been speculating that the voters in Shillong and Tura have not taken kindly to the partnership between the NPP and the BJP.
The opposition parties left no stone unturned to paint the NPP and the BJP in the same colour, especially after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma sought votes for the NPP in the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in non-tribal dominated areas of the city.
On some occasions, the NPP leadership maintained that they never sought the support of the BJP but the saffron party backed the NPP on their own.
Hek, however, claimed that it was the opinion of some individuals and not of the party.
Denying allegations that the BJP leadership did not give their best during the campaign period, Hek said he campaigned for the NPP in his constituency.
When asked about the allegations that many BJP workers did not receive logistical support from the party leadership to work for the NPP, Hek said it was the duty of the NPP to arrange logistical support for the BKP workers.
Hek, who recently campaigned in New Delhi for the BJP, said the party would welcome TMC leader and former chief minister, Mukul Sangma if he desires to join the party.
Hek also claimed that several leaders from other parties would join the BJP after the declaration of results for the Lok Sabha polls on June 4.
