Call to create green belt

 TURA: Vanamahotsava was observed at Jawaharlal Navadaya Vidyalaya school premises by the Social Forestry Division, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar on Wednesday.

Vanamahotsava – the Festival of Trees is significant and annually celebrated during the month of July, informed T Wanniang, MFS and DFO while delivering the keynote address.

The main objective of this programme is to increase the forest cover and for improving the environment. He also spoke about bio-diversity, forest policy of 1988 which stresses on maintaining the ecological balance of the environment. In view of the global environmental concern he insisted on creating a green belt in the area. He called upon the people to adopt scientific, economic bio-diversity in conserving the environment and appealed for judicious use of natural resources.

The chief guest, B K Hajong, ADM, East Garo Hills, while addressing the gathering said fishes of Simsang river has been decreasing very rapidly due to degradation of environmental of the region.

Further, unscientific mining of coal in the area added to the environmental degradation.

Nitish Das, MRDS representative, suggested people to plant a tree on their birthdays.

Asst. Director of Agriculture, R N Sangma was also present.
