TURA, June 6: The North- Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus recently celebrated its renowned Varsity Week, a prestigious event that highlights cultural diversity, athletic excellence, and literary talents of the students.
The Varsity Week was organized by the Council of Students’ Welfare, NEHU, Tura along with the students. The event commenced with an elaborate opening ceremony, featuring cultural shows and gatherings of students, deans, esteemed professors, and non-teaching staff representing various tribes of Northeast India. The ceremony was formally inaugurated by Prof. J.U. Ahmed, Campus Director, NEHU Tura Campus who delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the importance of unity in diversity and the crucial role such events play in fostering a cohesive university community.
The sports segment of Varsity Week under the guidance of Dr. Y. Somi Singh, emerged as a focal point, with competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, athletics, and traditional games generating significant enthusiasm. The football tournament stood out as a major attraction, marked by competitive matches and outstanding performances by the university’s athletes. Additionally, indoor games such as chess, carrom, and other board games were prominently featured, showcasing the strategic acumen and skill of the participants.
Cultural events supervised by Dr. Sunildro Akoijam were a highlight of the week, featuring an array of performances in music, dance, and skits that celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Northeast India. A key event showcased performances by various departmental groups, including folk dances, modern fusion routines, and theatrical plays, all of which received considerable acclaim from the audience.
The literary component of the Varsity Week that took place under the guidance of Dr. Namrata Pathak and Dr. L.K Gracy, included debates, short story writing, poetry writing, essay writing, extempore speech, and quiz competitions. The debate competition was particularly notable, with participants engaging in rigorous discussions on contemporary socio-scientific issues. Literary events were enriched by esteemed guest speakers from various academic fields, who offered students profound insights and knowledge.
The closing ceremony, held on June 4, was a grand affair. It featured the presentation of awards to winners of various competitions, musical performances by students, and folk dances that highlighted the cultural heritage and diversity of Meghalaya.
