Assam to give bravery award in school girl’s name

Guwahati: The Assam government has decided to institute an annual state bravery award in the name of Gunjan Sharma, an eighth standard girl who had offered herself as hostage to a gunman to save her juniors.
Informing of the decision on Friday, government sources said the award will be given from this year and the first recipient will be Gunjan herself.
The award will consist of a cash amount of Rs 2 lakh, a citation and a memento.
Gunjan, a student of Simaluguri Kendriya Vidyalaya, had offered herself as hostage to a gunman who had hijacked the school van in which Gunjan was traveling in, along with about eight younger students, at Nazira in Sivsagar district on December 4 last. (UNI)
