SHILLONG, June 14: The Jaintia Hills Cement Manufacturers’ Association has moved the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner for the repair of National Highway-6 in the district.
In a letter to the DC, the association informed that the NH-6, particularly at the Umtyra area, is in a deplorable condition.
“The road about 50-100 meters in that particular area washed away since long and the road becomes too narrow for movement of heavy vehicles. Due to this, we have been witnessing huge traffic jams on the highway. There is probability for any vehicle can fall  into the collapsed ground. The situation is getting worsen day by day and no action has been taken to repair that particular area since long,” it said.
The association also referred to the road condition between Lumshnong and Ratacherra. “This vital highway, which serves as a lifeline for our region, is currently in a state of disrepair, causing significant challenges for the transportation of finished goods, particularly cement produced by industries in this area,” it said.
The association also informed that if unaddressed, the dilapidated road conditions can severely impact the operational efficiency of the cement factories in the district.
“We, therefore, request you to prioritize the repair and maintenance of National Highway 6, with a particular emphasis on the section between Lumshnong to Ratacherra,” the association said.
