WGH meet takes up crimes against women, children

SHILLONG, July 4: The Committee on Empowerment of Women of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday held a meeting in Tura to discuss critical issues concerning the districts of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills, with a special emphasis on crimes against women and children.
According to a statement here, the meeting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Santa Mary Shylla, in the presence of committee members, viz. MLA Marthon J Sangma, MLA Matthew B Kurbah, MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang, MLA Gabriel Wahlang, and MLA Damanbiat Lamare.
The meeting was also attended by the deputy commissioners of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police of South West Garo Hills, and other officials.
Shylla, during the meeting, informed that the primary focus of the meeting was to take up various issues, especially crimes against women and children in the two districts.
She stated that the Committee plans to address these issues with the government, highlighting the need for resources such as shelter homes and psychiatric services.
The Committee also met the victim of a recent incident in which a woman was publicly flogged in West Garo Hills.
The victim is currently receiving care at the One Stop Centre in Tura.
