SHILLONG, July 6: The state BJP on Saturday cast aspersions on the government for the poor condition of primary education and primary health centres (PHCs) across Meghalaya, attributing the same to government negligence.
“After visiting numerous schools and health centres, it is evident that primary education and primary health are not priorities for the state government, despite assurances made during the election,” said state BJP vice president and Tura MDC, Bernard N Marak.
Accusing political leaders of compromising on education and health sectors, Marak said, “None have contributed or made efforts to improve facilities for their voters.”
He then criticised the state government for its inadequate efforts to improve the conditions of health centres and primary schools. “The state cared less for education and health despite imposing cess taxes from all services and goods. It is sad to see that these institutions are running pathetically in all the villages without much support from the state.”
Marak reminded that primary education and primary health were major departments under the autonomous district councils (ADCs) but were taken over by the state after statehood with promises of enhancement.
“These institutions have deteriorated over the years and now survive on funds sanctioned by the Centre,” he noted.
Marak asserted that these institutions should be handed back to the ADCs as agreed in the Agreed Text for Settlement. “I am concerned because poor families cannot afford to send their children to private schools as they are very expensive. Primary schools in villages should have been made better to ensure a firm foundation,” he said.
