U Soso Tham Death anniversary observed

SHILLONG: Arts and Culture Minister Clement Marak on Wednesday said that the people should get inspiration from the works of litterateur U Soso Tham.
Addressing a function to commemorate the 73rd death anniversary of U Soso Tham here on Wednesday, Clement Marak said, “We should feel proud of the contribution which he has made into the society.”
He also stressed on the need that people should learn and get inspired from his writings.
The 73rd Death Anniversary of the legendary Khasi poet, U Soso Tham, was observed with solemnity in the city here on Tuesday as later an act in Hindi language was also presented which revolved around the life of U Soso tham and students also presented their speech on the poet.
Earlier in the day, Clement Marak paid his tribute to the legendary poet at his statue in the State Central Library complex and school students also lighted up candles and honoured the legendary poet.
It may be mentioned that U Soso Tham was born in 1873 in Sohra. He was the first poet to initiate secular literature with diction, both singular and genuine and also the first person to make use of Khasi idioms in a form taken mainly from English poetry.
He is basically remembered for his beautiful poems. His Ka Duitara Kshiar (The Golden Harp, 1925) – a compilation of poems, is one of the most distinguished works. He is widely regarded as the greatest icon in the literary history of Meghalaya.
