SHILLONG, Sep 8: The first meeting of the committee set up by the Centre to study the proposed Sixth Schedule amendment bill is likely to be held next week.
This was disclosed by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai to a delegation of the ten autonomous district councils of the Northeast that met him in Delhi recently.
“We had proposed to host the first round of the meeting of the committee in Shillong but there has been no confirmation so far,” KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem said.
According to him, Rai also confirmed that the Centre received suggestions and views from the ten ADCs.
“The committee headed by the Union MoS will take up the proposals of the different ADCs separately,” he said.
Earlier, the CEM had revealed that the Centre was likely to table the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the winter session of Parliament in November.
He said the committee will try to resolve the issues holding up the bill that intends to grant more financial, executive and administrative powers to the autonomous councils under the Sixth Schedule.
