SHILLONG, Sep 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to dismantling the entire supply chain and controlling the drug menace in Meghalaya, acknowledging that the issue is complex and extends beyond state borders.
“The government is very serious about cracking down on drugs, the supply chain, and drug usage. In the last few years, drugs worth hundreds of crores have been seized. We have set up laboratories, arrested many individuals, and the government is working aggressively to curb and control the situation,” the CM stated.
Referring to a recent seizure, he noted that two individuals were arrested under the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. “These actions are examples of the substantial steps being taken in the fight against drugs,” he said.
Highlighting the alarming ratio of drug users and arrests in East Khasi Hills, Sangma added, “This is why drugs worth hundreds of crores have been seized. It reflects the seriousness of the government’s approach and the actions we’ve taken.” He emphasised that while the drug issue is severe, it requires collective effort to address it. He reminded the public that the state government recently formed a committee led by Additional Deputy Commissioners across various cities and towns, which also involves local leaders like Rangbah Shnongs (village headmen). “We need society to work together if we are to tackle the drug menace,” Sangma stressed.
Speaking on the success of initiatives like the DREAM project, aimed at combating drug abuse at the grassroots level, he said, “Yes, it’s a complicated problem that extends beyond our borders. But from the Government of India to various state governments, we are ensuring that everyone becomes part of the solution.”
