SHILLONG, Sep 25: NPP leader and Cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Wednesday said that his party holds an advantage in the upcoming by-election in Gambegre Assembly constituency, as the public prefers to have their representatives in the ruling government rather than in the Opposition.
“Every election is important. If you look at the environment and momentum, it seems like NPP is gaining significant support. I was there for three days and witnessed the people’s turnout during the campaign. It looks very favourable for NPP right now,” said Rakkam.
He added, “The people of Gambegre know that it’s no secret — they want to be aligned with the government because they seek development, support for schools, roads, buildings, and hospitals. There’s much to be done, and while not everything can be achieved at once, there is substantial support building for the ruling party.”
When asked whether opposition MLAs are discriminated against in the allotment of schemes and development, Rakkam responded, “No, that’s not the case. However, opposition MLAs often speak in the assembly but don’t approach the Chief Minister or submit proposals. Being in the ruling government gives us better access to resources. Nevertheless, the government is making efforts to ensure development reaches every corner of the state.”
When asked who NPP’s closest competitor is in the Gambegre bypoll, he said, “It’s difficult to predict, but right now, NPP has a strong upper hand. The people’s support is clear, and it seems like the Trinamool Congress (TMC) might be our closest competitor, making it a tight contest with NPP.”
