SHILLONG, Oct 3: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Academic Council, in an emergency meeting on Thursday, approved the implementation of the new University Grants Commission (UGC) grading system starting from the 2022 batch.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla stated that the Academic Council resolved to adopt the new grading system in the best interest of the students. Prof Shukla mentioned that on September 23, he had convened a Deans Committee meeting following representations from various student groups advocating for the new grading system.
After discussions with the Deans of different Schools, a consensus was reached, aligning with the requests from student groups. The Controller of Examinations presented the matter during the meeting, and members deliberated on the grading system under various ordinances for postgraduate students of the 2022-2024 batch.
Prof Shukla further informed that the Deans Committee decided to accept the Controller’s proposal to process the results of all PG students’ semesters from the 2022-2024 batch according to OC-20, subject to rectification in the next Academic Council meeting.
Addressing a query, Prof Shukla acknowledged that despite the Deans Committee’s decision, some students still had doubts, albeit the Deans are part of the Academic Council. “It’s a matter of trust, as the Academic Council will rectify any concerns. We initially planned to discuss the matter in a regular meeting, but we respect the sentiments of the students,” he said.
Prof. Shukla clarified that there is no significant difference between the old and new grading systems. The only change is in the letter grades: the new system will use grades like A+, A, B+, and B, while the old system had grades such as A, B, C, D, E, and F.
