SHILLONG, Oct 1: The state government is yet to complete the assessment of the damages inflicted on power utilities by recent floods in Garo Hills, though the impact is expected to be substantial.
“We are currently assessing the situation. Restoration efforts are almost complete, except for one substation, which was scheduled for inauguration on the 8th of this month. Part of its transmission line was washed away. We will inaugurate it after the Gambegre bypoll,” informed Power Minister AT Mondal.
He said that assessment is underway in West Garo Hills, and in South Garo Hills, efforts are split between the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the distribution franchise, with both working to consolidate damage reports.
Discussing the impact of the recent floods in the region, he noted, “Entire bridges were washed away toward Bangladesh, and the damage is extensive.”
He attributed the flash flood to incessant rains in Dalu, which, according to him, has been deemed unprecedented by the locals.
The minister stated that emergency services responded swiftly, providing relief to affected areas. It may be mentioned that at least ten people were killed in Garo Hills following the recent flooding.
