Shillong, Nov 11: Governor, CH Vijayashankar on Friday has suggested the NEHUTA and MeTTA-NEHU to act as a mediator to end the current stalemate in the university.

At the same time, the Governor who is also the Chief Rector of the university, also wants the students to end their indefinite hunger strike as he is concerned about their health.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Governor at Raj Bhavan, MeTTA-NEHU vice president, Prof Donkupar Syiem informed that the Governor wants the teachers to be as mediators and also suggested that he will invite the state government, university administration and other stakeholders like the teachers’ associations and students’ association for a discussion.

Syiem said that the Governor wanted to have a point to point and one to one basis discussion to resolve the various issues of the university.

“We cannot give predictions on the outcome of this deliberation. But the positive thing is that the matters will be precipitated in the Governor House,” MeTTA-NEHU vice president said.

When asked about the tentative date of this deliberation at the Raj Bhavan, Syiem said that the meeting is likely to take place when the Governor returns on November 12.

According to him, the Governor understands the gravity of the situation and it can be prolonged since he does not want to continue with the strike.

“This was the message we got from the Governor,” he said.

Meanwhile, NEHUTA president, Prof Lakhon KMa said that the Governor wanted the teachers to suggest the best possible solution to end the hunger strike and to enable students to go back to their classes.

According to him, there is a need to look into the long term and short term solutions. “We are happy since the Governor is willing to talk with everyone including the agitating students. Probably, we will have joint discussion among the various stakeholders of the university,” he said.

Kma said that they have not come to meet the Governor to make any demands, adding that the intention was to apprise him on the situation in NEHU.

“We are happy since he was very patient to listen to our grievances,” NEHU president said.
