SHILLONG, Nov 16: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is grappling with local challenges as it undertakes highly technical work on the Dawki Bridge, a key component of the Shillong-Dawki road project.
According to sources, the Dawki Bridge area presents significant technical hurdles, including geotechnical investigations and soil testing.
The sources said local NGOs and taxi unions, however, are reportedly opposing the work, citing concerns over potential pollution in the Umngot River and the ongoing tourist festival.
They said whilst some pollution might occur during construction, possible measures were being taken to safeguard the river.
The existing Dawki Bridge, approximately 90 years old and four-metre wide, is set to be replaced with a 16-metre-wide, 368-metre-long structure.
Officials highlighted that the area’s complexities, including a peer height of 110 metres, demand work during the current construction season to avoid further delays and hardships for the public.
Acknowledging the challenges, NHIDCL has requested government intervention to address local opposition and facilitate the project.
The lack of an approach road and the need for hill cutting have added to the complications, with debris disposal being a particular concern.
However, officials stressed their commitment to minimising environmental impact.
It may be mentioned that the NHIDCL has already sought support from the
Chief Secretary and district administration to resolve the impasse and ensure timely execution of this critical infrastructure project.
