SHILLONG, Dec 7: The two-day Hills Festival concluded on Saturday at Lum’er Pyngngad, Umiam, offering an intimate, carefully curated experience showcasing the best of music, art and food.
The Forage Aisle, a focal point for food enthusiasts, highlighted locally sourced, wild ingredients. Led by Chef Nambie Jessica Marak and Team Roma Eatery, the section featured overlooked yet culturally significant ingredients. Chef Marak shared his experience using papaya flowers and lesser-known greens from his West Hills village, creating dishes that challenged Northeastern cuisine stereotypes.
“There’s a misconception that Northeastern food is all about meat,” Marak explained. ” Through the Forage Aisle, we’re showcasing edible plants growing in our backyards, highlighting their richness and cultural significance. It’s amazing to see visitors discovering these flavors.”
Marak emphasized the aisle’s significance, showcasing sustainable food practices and biodiversity. “The festival shares stories, breaks stereotypes and celebrates unique traditions.”
The Hills Festival seamlessly blended art, music and nature. Minimalist installations dotted the 43-acre venue, merging with Meghalaya’s natural beauty.
The Hills Live Stage hosted eclectic performances by Murder in Space, The Dixie Boyz, Ishan + Yashraj and I Built the Sky.
Hot air balloon rides offered breathtaking views of Umiam Lake and surrounding hills. Visitors described it as an unforgettable adventure paired with serenity. The festival also featured a dedicated kids’ area, which was delightfully pet-friendly, creating an inclusive atmosphere where families could bring along their children and pets.
It was organised by HYPE Meghalaya in collaboration with Meghalaya Tourism.
In its fifth edition, the Hills Festival lived up to its name, intertwining culture and creativity. Its emphasis on intimate experiences drew locals and tourists.
