Cerebral Palsy patients in Tura get adaptive customised chairs
TURA, Dec 16: The West Garo Hills District Social Welfare Office on Monday distributed customised adaptive chairs among cerebral palsy beneficiaries during a programme here. The programme was organised by District Social Welfare Office, Tura, in collaboration with District Resource Centre Disability Affairs, Tura, and State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs, Shillong, and was attended by Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Sadar, Tura, Manish Kumar, as the chief guest. In his address, Kumar said that the programme is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the government along with civil society organisations and communities for facilitating the life of differently abled beneficiaries so that they can excel and explore their capabilities. Emphasising the era of transformation, he said that these physical and social barriers could be broken by the intervention of the government, society and technology and make life easier for them. Further, he said that complete inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwDs) would be possible with the continuous support and facilitating these beneficiaries with employment opportunities along with the Accessible India campaign implemented by the Centre, so that all facilities such as education, infrastructure, employment, etc. is accessible and inclusive for all without any discrimination. Meanwhile, DRCDA Manager and Senior Physiotherapist, Tura Civil Hospital, Sujata Das, spoke about the symptoms and treatment of cerebral palsy, which is a neurological disorder that affects a person’s ability to move, maintain balance and control their muscles. Das also informed the gathering that the types of cerebral palsy are classified based on mobility limitations. Meanwhile, she also informed that these adaptive customised chairs are being made under the UDID Project for the CP beneficiaries on trial basis. On the occasion, certificates were also distributed among the PwD carpenters who were engaged in building the chairs. The beneficiaries were selected from all the districts of the Garo Hills region.

6-day training programme moulds beauticians in make-up, hairstyling
SHILLONG, Dec 16: In a bid to provide aspiring beauticians with insights into modern hair and makeup trends and comprehensive grooming techniques, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Community College (DDUCC) for Skill Development, Wahiajer, a constituent college of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), conducted a six-day ‘Makeup and Hairstyling’ training programme for young women, which culminated on Saturday. The programme was inaugurated by Prof H Lamin (Retd), the Founder Principal (In-Charge) of DDUCC, Wahiajer, who also served as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasised the college’s mission under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) to empower the community through skill development. The event drew enthusiastic participation from young women eager to explore opportunities in the makeup and hairstyling industry. Over six days, trainers Jenefa Lamare and Artysong Lamare guided the participants through various practical techniques, equipping them with the confidence and skills needed to pursue careers as beauticians. The program encouraged entrepreneurial spirit, aiming to transform creative talent into sustainable livelihoods. The valedictory ceremony on Saturday featured Teiborlang Pathaw, Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, as the chief guest, alongside other dignitaries, including Dr FR Sumer, Librarian at NEHU, and Maurice Lyngdoh, a former educator. In his address, Pathaw shared life lessons and inspired the participants to persevere in achieving their goals.
