SHILLONG, Dec 18: United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Mawsynram MLA, Ollan Singh Suin, has called for greater investment in the tourism sector of Mawsynram, emphasizing its potential to become a prominent tourist hotspot
“Mawsynram, known as the wettest place on earth, already attracts many tourists. However, there are still unexplored areas with immense potential to be developed into major tourist attractions,” Suin said.
He further stated, “We are planning to explore some key spots, and I am optimistic about the future since improved road connectivity is already in the pipeline.” Suin expressed confidence that with better infrastructure and strategic development, Mawsynram could draw more tourists and witness significant growth in its tourism industry.
Over the past decade, Meghalaya has experienced remarkable growth in its tourism sector. This progress is credited to several factors, including increased awareness of the state’s natural beauty, improved connectivity, and targeted government initiatives to promote tourism.
The state’s efforts to establish itself as a premier tourist destination are showing results. Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and high-profile music events are drawing visitors from across India and abroad. However, the surge in tourist numbers has also revealed significant gaps in infrastructure, threatening the long-term sustainability of this tourism boom.
A prime example is Nongjrong, a village approximately 58 km from Shillong. Once a hidden gem, it gained immense popularity after social media posts showcased its stunning sunrise views. This viral attention led to an unregulated influx of tourists, particularly on weekends and holidays, transforming the village into a tourist hotspot almost overnight.
While the growth in tourism has brought opportunities, it also highlights the need for sustainable planning and infrastructure development to ensure Meghalaya can manage its growing popularity without compromising its natural and cultural heritage.
