Govt to set up centres of indigenous culture

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma on Thursday informed that the Government would set up institutions in the State to promote and preserve the diverse indigenous dance, music and culture and to nurture and cater to the talents of the youth.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while addressing a mammoth gathering at Betasing in South West Garo Hills on the penultimate day of the three-day Rhythm of the Hills Festival.
Dr. Sangma informed that the proposed institution would be set up in every Community Development Block in the State.
Reiterating that the State Government is committed to promoting Meghalaya as a global tourist hub, the Chief Minister informed that funds have been earmarked for promotion of tourism by harnessing the rich cultural traditions of the State.
On the need to promote and brand Meghalaya as a popular winter destination, Dr. Sangma said that the Government is working on an elaborate plan to popularize the State as an attractive global tourist destination. He, further, stressed on the need to focus on branding and marketing Meghalaya throughout the world as an alternative winter destination.
Encouraging the people to revive their culture, Dr. Sangma said, “Tourists from Europe and the US would like to visit this part of the world for something diverse. Hence, it is our duty to preserve our identity at all cost.”
Among the highlights of the second day of the Festival, several competitions like Wangala Dance, indigenous sports and indigenous musical instruments were organised, besides display of cultural dances by various communities.
