SHILLONG, Dec 31: The Congress, which currently has no representatives in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from the Garo Hills region, has initiated groundwork to strengthen its grassroots support and identify potential candidates for elections to the GHADC slated for 2026 as well as the 2028 Assembly elections.
“Certainly, there is a gap in representation from the Garo Hills in terms of MLAs, but that does not matter. Many ex-MLAs have joined us, and they are equally committed to doing what is necessary for the party. Additionally, several candidates are already preparing to contest the elections,” said Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Vincent H Pala.
Pala remarked, “While there may be limitations in terms of services provided by others, apart from schemes, people are aware of the realities, and it is manageable.”
He added, “We are taking this seriously. I just returned from Garo Hills, where I met many leaders and probable candidates. Preparations are under way for the 2026 MDC elections and the 2028 Assembly elections. We are working on the ground and offering support services to the people.”
Pala also highlighted the Congress’s consistent efforts during crises, stating, “During floods or any other emergencies, our members are always present. While there may be gaps, they are not significant and are being managed through the hard work of our party members.”
The Congress has faced challenges in the region, particularly after Saleng A Sangma was elected as the Tura MP. His resignation as the MLA of the Gambegre constituency, coupled with the party’s failure to retain the seat, has left the Congress without any MLAs in the entire Garo Hills region.
