Village head thrashed in Latur district; three booked

Latur, Jan 18: A sarpanch was allegedly assaulted by a mob in a village in Latur district on Saturday, police said. A case was registered at Nilanga police station against three persons on a complaint lodged by Shedolwadi village sarpanch sarpanch Shaikh Rubab, a police inspector told. Rubab was attacked by some men who alleged that a relative of one of them suffered an electric shock at a pole. They also manhandled gramsevak NS Patil and ransacked the panchayat office. A video of the incident has gone viral. (PTI)

10-yr-old boy dies after falling off swing

Jajpur, Jan 18: A class 4 student died after falling off a swing on the school premises in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Saturday, police said. The deceased boy was identified as Soumyaranjan Sahu of Bagapatia Upper Primary school under Danagadi block. The 10-year-old boy was playing on a swing with some of his friends during school hours when he suddenly fell and sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, police said. (PTI)

Cop critical after shooting self over share market losses

Nagpur, Jan 18: A head constable tried to end his life in Nagpur on Saturday after suffering losses in the share market, an official said. Vishal Tumsare (50), who was part of Thane Rural police since 2023 after a stint with the State Reserve Police Force, shot himself with his service rifle while on guard duty outside the superintendent of police’s house in Vrundavan area under Hingna police station limits, the official said. “SP Harssh Poddar immediately rushed him to the AIIMS here. Tumsare’s condition is critical,” he said. (PTI)

Balloon with scientific payload panics villagers

Bidar, Jan 18: A balloon with a scientific payload fell in a village in this district in Karnataka on Saturday creating panic among the people there, sources said. Later it was found that the equipment was launched by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), from Hyderabad. The equipment fell with a loud noise in Jalasingi village in Humnabad Taluk. As soon as the payload landed in the village, curious villagers surrounded it and thought it was a debris of a satellite, sources added. Homnabad police visited the place and found it was launched by TIFR and informed them. (PTI)
