SHILLONG, Feb 3: UDP candidate and sitting MLA from Sohiong, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, has stated that there is no conflict within his family, despite contesting against his cousin, Congress candidate Nathaniel Rymmai.
It may be noted that Rymmai is the son of late HDR Lyngdoh, a former minister and sitting UDP MLA until his passing.
Speaking to reporters after filing his nomination from the Nongspung-Sohiong constituency on Monday, Lyngdoh emphasised that democracy allows anyone to contest elections. He dismissed speculation of family discord, asserting that running against each other does not imply a dispute.
It is worth mentioning that following his father’s demise, Rymmai had supported Lyngdoh’s candidacy in the 2023 Assembly elections.
Lyngdoh outlined his priorities if elected as MDC, stating that his primary focus would be on strengthening grassroots governance. He also highlighted the need to improve solid waste management in areas under the KHADC.
A geography postgraduate, Lyngdoh stressed the importance of demarcating boundaries within Elakas and Himas using GIS mapping. “I also aim to strengthen the existing laws of the council,” he added.
He further mentioned that his decision to contest was made after consulting with farmers.
When asked about his motivation for running, the Sohiong legislator revealed that there were four aspirants for the party ticket. “But it is the voice of the people that convinced me to contest this election,” he said.
