Govt regulates fund release under poll code

SHILLONG: With an aim to ensure free and fair elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), the government has decided to regulate the release of funds under the MLAs’ local area development fund by any department in the districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

In a circular issued by the Commissioner and Secretary of the District Council Affairs it was stated that no fresh release of funds under the MLAs’ local area development fund shall be made by any department in respect of the districts in Khasi and Jaintia Hills till the completion of the election process.

The circular also stated that “no work, for which the work order has been issued but the work has actually not started in the field before the issue of the notification for calling the constituencies to elect their representatives under Rule124(2), should be started. Such works van be started after the completion of the election process. However, if the work has actually started, it can continue.” The circular also stated that ceremonies for laying of foundation stones and announcement of any new schemes funded under the state plan in the districts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills division should be kept on hold till the election process is over.
