Krishna Jayasankar sets women’s indoor shot put national record
New Delhi, March 2: India’s Krishna Jayasankar, currently studying in the USA, broke the women’s shot put indoor national record when she won the bronze medal at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship in Albuquerque with an effort of 16.03m. The 22-year-old Krishna, who was representing University of Nevada, bettered the previous Indian indoor national record of 15.54m set by Maharashtra’s Poornarao Rane in 2023. Krishna’s 16.03m effort on Saturday came in the last round. Two Colorado throwers, Mya Lensar (19.02m) and Gabby Morns (17.09m), took the gold and silver respectively in the indoor event held in Albuquerque in New Mexico state. (PTI)
Yuki wins maiden ATP 500 doubles title in Dubai
Dubai, March 2: India’s Yuki Bhambri claimed his maiden ATP 500 men’s doubles title after he and his Australian partner Alexei Popyrin staged a dramatic comeback to edged past world No 14 Harri Heliovaara of Finland and Great Britain’s Henry Patten at the Dubai Tennis Championships here. Having lost the first set, the duo saved four match points in the second set against Heliovaara and Patten to seal a 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 win in a 51-minute contest on Saturday. With this win, Bhambri is set to achieve a career-high ranking of No 40 in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday. Their title-winning run featured a string of impressive wins. The duo had a stunning run, first eliminating World No. 1, Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador and Mate Pavic of Croatia 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-3. In the quarterfinals, the Indo-Australian pair won 5-7, 7-6(5), 10-5 against the British duo of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool. Then in the last-four, they ousted Jamie Murray of Great Britain and John Peers of Australia 5-4, 4-6, 10-7. Greece-born Stephanos Tsitsipas claimed the men’s singles title after beating Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3. (PTI)
India’s Bollipalli wins Chile Open doubles title
New Delhi, March 2: India’s Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli and his Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos stunned top seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni of Argentina in straight sets to win the Chile Open tennis tournament in Santiago. The unseeded Indo-Colombian pair defeated Gonzalez and Molteni 6-3, 6-2 in the final that lasted for a little over one hour on Saturday. Bollipalli and Barrientos dominated from the word go and served 11 aces in the match as against their opponent’s just one en route to winning the ATP 250 tournament. (PTI)
Telangana, Delhi win in Senior Women National Hockey C’hips
Panchkula, March 2: Telangana and Delhi claimed victories in division B while Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu won their division C matches on the second day of Hockey India Senior Women National Championship here on Sunday. In pool A of division B, Telangana started their campaign with a 3-1 win over Assam to open the day’s events. Assam struck the first blow with an impressive field goal by captain Munmuni Das (14th minute). However, Telangana were prompt with their reply as they scored three quick goals in the second quarter via Prativa Kindo (23rd minute), Sumi Mundari (26th) and Pooja Rathod (28th) to win the match. In the second division B match of the day, Delhi edged out Himachal 1-0 in pool B. Neha (14th) successfully converted a penalty corner in the first quarter to score the match’s only goal. Delhi’s resilient defending over the next three quarters ensured they claimed all the points and continued their winning streak. The last game of the day in division B ended in a 1-1 draw as both Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh couldn’t be separated over the four quarters. In what was a tightly contested affair, Anjali (47th) finally broke the deadlock for Chhattisgarh in the fourth quarter. The lead, however, only stood for two minutes as Chandigarh scored the equaliser via Sonu’s (49th) field goal. (PTI)
