Baghmara, March 17: In an effort to strengthen the sports culture at the grassroots level and encourage greater participation of women in athletics, the District Sports Officer (DSO) of South Garo Hills, in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, and Khelo India Centre, organised the Asmita Open Archery City League at the Baghmara Government Higher Secondary School playground.
The competition, which took place on March 15, featured two categories—sub-junior and junior. In the sub-junior division, Priskila Marak claimed the top spot, followed by Krimesa Sangma in second place and Rasongchi S Marak in third. Meanwhile, in the junior category, Palme Jakrimchi Marak secured first place, with Jasmine Marak and Chenbi Sangma finishing second and third, respectively.
The tournament aimed to provide young archers with a platform to showcase their skills while fostering a competitive sports environment in the region.
The Asmita Open Archery City League not only highlighted the growing interest in archery among young athletes in South Garo Hills but also reinforced the importance of grassroots initiatives in nurturing sporting talent. With continued support from the government and local authorities, such events can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of archery in Meghalaya, inspiring more young players—especially girls—to take up the sport and excel on bigger stages.
