SHILLONG, May 7: The state government is currently reviewing a recommendation from the Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) regarding the nomination of a Member of the District Council (MDC).
Last week, the EC proposed Mathew Keneth Makdoh, a member of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) from Ri-Bhoi, for the position of nominated MDC.
Sources revealed on Wednesday that the District Council Affairs (DCA) department is still scrutinising the proposal. The file will first be submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the DCA Department, before moving forward.
According to sources, the file will be forwarded to the Governor for final approval only after it receives clearance from the government.
Notably, Makdoh’s nomination has the backing of the VPP’s central leadership, headed by Ardent M. Basaiawmoit.
KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah confirmed the recommendation and expressed optimism that Governor CH Vijayashankar would approve it. He also emphasised that under existing rules, the Executive Committee is empowered to recommend a candidate for the nominated MDC post to the Governor.
Makdoh had recently contested the KHADC elections from Nongpoh as a VPP candidate but was defeated by the NPP’s Rona Khymdeit.
