Guwahati: An engineering student in Assam has developed a ‘Rhino saving device’ to protect the famous one-horned rhinoceros from poachers.

The device is fitted with two components – a belt with a smart circuit and a micro GPS transponder.

It has been invented by Ranbir Singh, a mechanical engineering student of Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST), situated on the outskirts of Guwahati. After this device is installed, the locations of the poachers can be easily tracked.

Ranbir took more than six months to transform his idea into a device. Apart from serving as a rhino tracker, the device has various other applications. It can be installed in a vehicle to protect it from being stolen.

Mahbubul Hoque, Chairman, ERD Foundation, and Dr P C Mahanta, Director, RIST and all other faculty members have appreciated his efforts and congratulated him on his innovations. RIST is an AICTE-approved institute run by the ERD Foundation. (UNI)
