JOWAI, May 19: The Coordination Committee on International Border (CCIB) has demanded the postponement of the proposed joint inspection/survey of the construction of the border fencing along the areas bordering Bangladesh.
In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills through Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of West Jaintia Hills, HML Kynta, the CCIB strongly opposed the joint inspection scheduled for May 20 and 21 in the areas of Amjalong, Kyrweng and Jaliakhola — villages that fall under the West Jaintia Hills in the Amlarem Sub-Division — because the matter is currently under the consideration of the High Court.
CCIB Chairman Sukkynjai Myrchiang along with members of the KSU, FKJGP and HNYF after meeting Kynta on Tuesday stated that the landowners had already filed a case regarding the border fencing since the year 2021.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the CCIB, along with the landowners of those areas “are not against the idea of constructing the border fence, but their primary demand is that the local residents should not lose their land and property due to the fencing project.”
In light of this, the CCIB strongly urges the district authorities to postpone the Joint Inspection until the case is resolved in the Court in order to avoid any complications and to allow the court to decide on the matter.
The High Court of Meghalaya had recently directed the state to expedite the fencing work along the Indo-Bangladesh borer in Meghalaya. Subsequently, the government had directed the Deputy Commissioners of districts falling along the border to consider border fencing as their top priority.
