SHILLONG, July 3: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah has revoked the restriction on the movement of vehicles on the Mawmaram-Nongthliew-Mawmih-Mawlyndep road following the completion of a new subway at Umbir.
The earlier restriction, which was imposed on April 21, had prohibited the movement of overloaded vehicles exceeding nine metric tonnes on the road to ensure public safety and protect the bridge and road infrastructure.
The relaxation was announced following a communication from the Executive Engineer, PWD (Roads), Umsning Division, that informed that the construction of the subway at Bridge No. 6/1 at Umbir had been completed and was open for public use.
Although the permissible load on the bridge remains restricted to nine metric tonnes, all light and heavy vehicles have been directed to use the newly constructed subway adjacent to the bridge instead of the bridge itself.
In view of the completion of the subway, the DC on Thursday revoked the earlier order with immediate effect.
Vehicles not exceeding nine metric tonnes are now permitted to ply on the Mawmaram-Nongthliew-Mawmih-Mawlyndep-Lad Umsaw road, provided they use the designated subway at Umbir, so as to ensure the continued protection of the bridge while facilitating smoother vehicular movement in the area.
