'Youth Parliament' on Meghalaya State Youth Policy draft organised

NONGPOH: The Nehru Yuva Kendra, Shillong on Tuesday organized a one day ‘Youth Parliament’ which was held at Bharat Scouts and Guides Campus, Shillong. The programme was organized in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Shillong as part of the District Youth Festival being organized in different parts of the district which started from February 10. The closing ceremony held on Tuesday was attended by the OSD of Meghalaya State Legal AID Authority J K Lyngdoh.
Many innovative need based activities were conducted at village level in coordination with different local youth clubs, in which the programme was aimed at promoting and strengthening the spirit of voluntarism.
Activities Conducted were, construction of public toilet at Lynshing Village market place by Lamlynti Social Cultural & Sports Club and Laitsohpliah View point by Laisohpliah Sports and cultural club, sanitation and hygiene campaign at Um-iew River Nongkrem by Nongkrem Youth Development Association, Seminar on Youth for Positive Change by Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong, trained 25 girls in Taekwondo for Self Defense and Go School Campaign for children from economically weaker section.
The whole activities culminated on Tuesday in the form of ‘Youth Parliament’ in which more than 100 youth club members took part. The Youth Parliament was organized in order to experience the democratic system and its functioning in our country and also to learn how the political system such as Parliament and Assembly are working.
Identified youth leaders from different backgrounds were made to be acted as Chief Minister, cabinet ministers and also Opposition leader. Various youth related issues on the basis of the Draft document of Meghalaya State Youth Policy and the National Youth Policy 2014 were deliberated and discussed.
One counter of Information cum Help Desk of Meghalaya State Legal AID Authority was also run during the day in which important handouts and broachers were distributed to the participating youths, as part of the programme.
