TURA, Aug 11: South Garo Hills-based social activist, Greneth Sangma, on Monday appealed that Aadhaar-related fields on websites be made optional, so as to allow users to choose whether to use Aadhaar or other accepted identification methods for verification purposes.
In an appeal to the Administrator, Aadhaar Website/Portal, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Greneth cited the recent Supreme Court ruling, contempt of court concerns, the need for user flexibility and inclusivity and the availability of alternate verification methods as reasons to make Aadhaar requirements optional.
“This would be in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling and help ensure that the website is accessible to all users. Specifically, in Meghalaya, where the High Court has also emphasised the importance of protecting individual rights, it is crucial that the website’s configuration respects users’ autonomy in choosing their identification method,” he added.
