SHILLONG, Aug 11: The East Khasi Hills district administration has declared the stretch from Khyndai Lad towards Umsohsun as a complete “pedestrian zone” between 4 pm and 9 pm daily with effect from August 13.
An order issued by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah said that in pursuance to instructions from the government, vehicles will not be allowed on the stretch during the said period of time.
The idea of turning the stretch into a “pedestrian zone” for only five hours daily does not seem to be in tune with the earlier announcements of the state government which had promised turning the entire stretch into a pedestrian zone.
The government had even announced issuing passes to the residents of the area to enable them to drive their vehicles in the area at certain hours of the day.
Observers say that the idea of turning this stretch into a pedestrian zone only for a few hours defeats the entire objective of developing the stretch in the line MG Marg in Gangtok, as promised earlier.
