SHILLONG, Aug 12: The High Court of Meghalaya is scheduled to conduct hearings on August 29 on criminal petitions seeking to quash proceedings in the 2009 education scam case, in which Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh is among the accused.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji on Monday partially heard the petitions, which arise from alleged irregularities in the recruitment of assistant teachers for government lower primary schools during 2008–09.
According to the CBI, the accused manipulated result sheets through interpolation, forgery, and fabrication to benefit selected candidates.
Of the 492 witnesses listed by the prosecution, 317 have been dropped and six new ones added. The court cautioned that such a reduction must not compromise the strength of the evidence.
So far, 28 witnesses have testified in the case.
