City college hosts online drug awareness campaign

SHILLONG, Aug 16: St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, through its Alumni Association (SECAA), Department of Social Work – PG, National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, and IQAC organised an online drug awareness campaign under the theme ‘Youth for a Drug-Free India’.
The programme began with a prayer led by Dr. Baljuda War Nongbri, Dean of the College, followed by a welcome address by Dr. KP Pallavi, vice principal (Academics). Participants then took the #AzadiFromDrugs pledge through the NMBA portal, reaffirming their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
This was followed by an insightful lecture by James Pde, who spoke on the health and social impacts of drug abuse while sharing his recovery journey. Jeremiah Nongrum further inspired the audience by narrating his personal story of recovery.
A poster-making competition showcased 14 creative entries by students advocating for a drug-free society. After evaluation, Melisa Kharbyngar was declared the winner of the competition.
In his address, Ramesh Bawri (SECAA) encouraged the youths to make a personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. The principal, Br. Sunil Britto, delivered the concluding remarks, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in addressing the drug menace.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. W. Syngkon and the College Anthem.
“The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, alumni and faculty, reaffirming the vital role of youth in building a drug-free future,” the statement said.
