SHILLONG, Aug 25: Mawsynram MLA Ollan Sing Suin on Monday announced that work on the world’s first Rain Museum at Mawsynram will officially begin once the ongoing monsoon season concludes.
He informed that tenders for the project have already been floated, and engineers are currently carrying out groundwork. The Rain Museum is a flagship initiative of the government aimed at transforming Meghalaya’s famed natural beauty into unique, experiential tourism attractions. Suin expressed optimism that the museum will redefine the tourism sector in Mawsynram, which is globally renowned as the wettest place on Earth.
Mawsynram receives an average of nearly 12,000 mm of rainfall annually. The proposed museum will feature interactive weather exhibits, allowing visitors to learn about clouds, the physics behind rainfall, and the impacts of climate change.
Once completed, the Rain Museum is expected to emerge as a major tourism landmark, celebrating both the cultural and environmental heritage of Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, Suin acknowledged that the constituency continues to face connectivity challenges.
Road construction from Mawphlang to Welloi is currently in progress, while work on the Welloi-Mawsynram stretch will also be taken up soon to improve access to the region.
On the issue of changing climatic conditions, the MLA observed that climate change has begun leaving its mark even in Mawsynram, where the density of rainfall has shown a noticeable decline this year.
