Presiding officer found drunk, arrested

TURA: A presiding officer from the Industries department has been arrested and suspended after being found drunk on duty during the crucial movement of polling parties to their respective destinations from Baghmara in South Garo Hills on Monday.

The functional manager of the District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC) in Baghmara identified as Wilson Kuper Laloo was the presiding officer for the polling party in Bilkona school under Baghmara. He has since been replaced.

“He was found drunk. He was misbehaving with others and we had to pin him down to a chair before police arrived,” informed deputy commissioner and district election officer(DEO) Chinmoy P Gothmare while speaking to The Shillong Times.

The officer spent the night in a police lock up at Baghmara police station and a suspension order was made out against him by the DEO. He is being produced before a court on Tuesday.

“He was under deputation with the Election Commission of India and we will take action against him under the elect ion laws including departmental proceedings. Already his suspension order has been given out,” said the deputy commissioner.
