KATHMANDU, Sep 11: The youth-led Gen Z group, which led anti-government protests in Nepal, has called for the dissolution of Parliament and amendment of the Constitution to reflect the will of the people.
The death toll from the demonstrations has increased to 34, and the group has organized a press meet to express their views. They have warned old political parties not to use them for their vested interests and have called for a united effort to protect national sovereignty, unity, and self-respect.
Activists have expressed support for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki for the post of new Prime Minister, while others have pushed for former CEO of Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising. They do not intend to assume leadership of the country but rather become a watchdog. The Ministry of Health reported that 34 people have died so far during the protests, and 1,338 individuals are receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli quit on Tuesday after hundreds of agitators demanded his resignation for the death of at least 19 people in police action during Monday’s protests over corruption and a social media ban. The ban on social media was lifted on Monday night. President Ramchandra Paudel has accepted Prime Minister Oli’s resignation but stated that the cabinet led by him will continue to run the government until a new Council of Ministers is formed. (PTI)
