SHILLONG, Sep 11: Ri-Bhoi Regional Committee member Mayralborn Syiem, who is also the legislator of Nongpoh, has called upon local communities across Meghalaya to actively assist in preventing illegal infiltration into the state
Citing ongoing infiltration attempts, he appealed to residents to remain alert and report any suspicious individuals to the authorities. He further highlighted the government’s heightened vigilance, particularly following a recent eviction drive in Assam. Syiem stressed the importance of fully implementing legal measures such as the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) and the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to effectively regulate the entry of outsiders.
On the stalled Phase-II of boundary talks, Syiem said the Ri-Bhoi border panel is awaiting a response from its Assam counterpart to fix a date for resuming discussions on unresolved border issues amid frequent confrontations along disputed areas. He expressed concern over the rising skirmishes in contested zones and urged local communities to remain vigilant, stressing that land remains a sensitive and critical matter for all parties involved.
With Assam scheduled to hold Assembly elections next year, Syiem noted that it is now evident the talks will resume only after the elections are concluded.
While the first phase of talks between Meghalaya and Assam brought some resolution, the second phase remains inconclusive.
