SHILLONG, Sep 26: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon on Thursday advocated for women’s health for stronger families and a healthier society.
The Shillong MP was addressing a special programme under the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan (SNSPA) organised at Smit PHC by the Office of the East Khasi Hills District Medical & Health Officer.
The nationwide campaign, being observed from September 17 to October 2, 2025, witnessed active participation from local communities, school students, health workers and representatives of village organisations. During the programme, posters, IEC materials and awareness messages highlighted critical issues such as nutrition, TB elimination and non-communicable diseases.
Inaugurating the programme, Syngkon, who was the chief guest, stressed that women’s health is the cornerstone of family well-being. “A healthy mother means healthy children and a stronger society. Through this campaign, the government seeks to ensure early detection and timely treatment so that families do not suffer due to fear or delay. Health is wealth, and good health is the foundation for a better economy and future,” he said.
On the other hand, Nongkrem MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit, who was the guest of honour, highlighted the need for individual responsibility in healthcare, and encouraged early detection and youth involvement in blood donation. Nongkrem MDC Kitbor Syiem also attended the programme as the special guest.
Earlier, DMHO Dr. AJU Kharkud and Joint Director of Health Services (MCH&FW) Dr. C Iangrai explained the objectives of the Abhiyaan, which includes integrated medical camps, blood donation drives and awareness programmes.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Sordar of Smit Pyllun, Pyngshongdor Lyngdoh Nongbri, followed by medical camps, blood donation and health awareness activities.
