SHILLONG, Sep 27: Six-time world champion and Olympic medallist M.C. Mary Kom received shocking news during the closing ceremony of the fourth edition of the Sohra International Half Marathon on Saturday, when she paused her speech to take an emergency phone call.
Addressing the gathering after the call, she revealed that her domestic help had informed her about a robbery at her Delhi residence.
“I am scared, nervous, and worried as I was supposed to return to Delhi today. I am a little disturbed and worried. I don’t know what is lost inside. I am not sure,” she said.
“This is life—whatever happens, happens,” she added.
Despite the unsettling news, the Olympic medallist completed her address to the participants, though visibly shaken by the incident.
The Sohra International Half Marathon (Detailed report on P-10), which concluded on Saturday, witnessed a record participation of 10,576 runners, the highest in the event’s history.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sohra, the event featured the flagship 21 km half-marathon, along with the 10 km race and the 5 km ‘Run for Fun.’ This year’s turnout marked a remarkable increase of more than 4,000 runners compared to last year’s 7,000, with participants ranging from international athletes and runners from across India to thousands of local enthusiasts.
