SHILLONG, Oct 3: Meghalaya on Thursday paid rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary through a solemn ceremony held at the Rilang Building (Main Secretariat) in Shillong.
Senior officials, staff and others gathered to offer floral tributes to the Father of the Nation.
The programme was led by Chief Secretary Dr Shakil P Ahammed, who laid a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi as a mark of respect and remembrance.
The event was attended by several key government officials, including Dr BDR Tiwari, Commissioner and Secretary; Vijay Kumar Mantri, Commissioner and Secretary, Information and Public Relations department; Swapnil Tembe, Secretary, Education Department; and RM Kurbah, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, along with other senior officers.
Officers and employees from various departments were also present at the ceremony.
The dignitaries took turns to pay their tributes at the statue, reiterating their commitment to Gandhian principles of peace, non-violence and selfless service.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief secretary highlighted the continued relevance of Gandhi’s ideals in contemporary world, particularly his emphasis on truth, simplicity and unity.
He also urged officials to uphold the values for which Gandhi lived and sacrificed, and encouraged everyone to embody those principles in both public service and personal conduct.
