SHILLONG, Oct 4: Scenic spots in and around Shillong, once among the cleanest cities in India, seem to be taking an ugly turn.
If residents find the accumulating dirt and garbage near Ward’s Lake quite concerning, people who use the overpass near Umiam Lake or gather there on Sundays are saddened by plastic packets, liquor bottles, and other garbage strewn around.
The situation is similar near Umiam, along a stretch of the road where trucks are parked.
People have been found to throw packets and leftover food bought from the roadside stalls there.
Many people who stop to enjoy the calmness and greenery discard food packets and beverage bottles at a stretch of the Nongkrem-Smit Road.
The scenario is no different at the IGP point and outside the DC’s office in the Meghalaya capital.
The sidewalls are littered, although a few dustbins have been placed by some individuals, almost as soon as the cleaners of the Shillong Municipal Board pick up the trash.
The vendors’ market wears a similar look while the walls of the MUDA have been painted red with kwai stains.
