SHILLONG, Oct 6: The KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle, in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Cell, on Monday shut down a pharmacy at Polo named Angshu Medical, owned by one Anup Dey, after discovering that an Ayurvedic practitioner was operating there without a valid license.
According to the Union, a woman claiming to be a BAMS (Ayurvedic) doctor had been dispensing medicines at the pharmacy for the past three months despite lacking proper authorization to practice. The KSU revealed that she is a student of the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) and currently holds only a provisional certificate while still undergoing her internship.
Describing the act as “illegal and dangerous,” the Union said it poses a serious risk to public health and safety. “No one should be allowed to practice medicine without valid documents and licenses issued by recognized institutions and the Health department,” it stated.
The Union also criticised the pharmacy owner for permitting such unauthorized medical practice without verifying the practitioner’s credentials, and subsequently ordered the pharmacy’s immediate closure.
The KSU further informed that it will soon meet with the management of NEIAH and officials from the State Health Department to demand stronger regulatory measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. “This kind of negligence directly endangers the health and well-being of the public, and strict action must be taken to ensure it is not repeated,” the KSU added.
