NEW DELHI: Rattled by the lingering political deadlock in Meghalaya, the AICC on Wednesday took stock of the state of affairs in the State at a high-level meeting which went on till Wednesday night but ended inconclusively. The AICC leaders will meet again on Thursday to hammer out a solution.

On Wednesday, AICC general secretary in-charge of the State, Dr Dhaniram Shandil, had a meeting with Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary, Ahmed Patel, and CWC member Oscar Fernandes to discuss the Meghalaya situation.

When former PCC president OL Nongtudu had met party president Sonia Gandhi last Saturday and raised the matter she had assured that she would discuss the same with the secretaries.

The Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma too had a meeting with Dr Shandil and Oscar Fernandes before he left for Shillong.

Meanwhile, Dr Shandil reiterated that the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma would continue and there would be no change of leadership.

Reacting to some reports why he did not call the meeting of the CLP during his last trip to the State he said the tour had specific agenda.

“The trip was to meet heads of frontal organisations, MLAs, PCC, DCC office bearers, MDCs and others willing to meet,” Dr Shandil said, adding “Accordingly, we hold the meetings as scheduled and visited the districts as planned earlier.”

The dissidents had complained to the party president that the AICC general secretary failed to call a meeting of the CLP, which could have permanently settled the leadership issue. On the other hand, Shandil maintains that calling a CLP is up to its leader, i.e. Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, and the MPCC president Dr Friday Lyngdoh.
