SHILLONG, Oct 10: A new scientific publication documenting Meghalaya’s rich amphibian diversity was unveiled on Friday during the valedictory function of Wildlife Week 2025, organised by the Forest and Environment department.
The book titled Amphibians of Meghalaya was formally released by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, D. Sathiyan.
Authored by Bhaskar Saikia of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Shillong, Dr. Bikramjit Sinha of ZSI Kolkata and Harish Chandra Choudhary, Chief Wildlife Warden of Meghalaya, the work represents a collaborative effort between the Meghalaya Forest and Environment department and the ZSI, Shillong.
Containing detailed profiles of 60 amphibian species found across Meghalaya, the volume includes high-quality colour photographs, defining characteristics, altitudinal distribution and precise habitat data.
The authors have also addressed long-standing errors in scientific classification, correcting taxonomic inconsistencies that had previously clouded records on several species.
Speaking at the launch, Sathiyan described the publication as a major step in advancing the state’s biodiversity documentation and conservation initiatives.
He remarked that Meghalaya’s diverse terrain and climatic conditions nurture some of India’s rarest amphibians and the book would significantly contribute to scientific research and public awareness of this ecological wealth.
Meghalaya, home to one of the most varied assemblages of amphibians in the country, supports many species that are exclusive to its forested and montane regions.
The newly released volume is expected to serve as a key reference for biologists, students, conservation professionals and nature enthusiasts.
It may be mentioned that the programme was attended by senior forest officials, experts from the Zoological and Botanical Survey of India, and conservationists representing various institutions across the Northeast.
