SHILLONG, Oct 12: The Congress has strongly criticised Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong for what it described as an insensitive reaction to the recent murders of two children in Meghalaya.
It may be recalled that two minors, reported missing from Nongrah locality, were subsequently found dead, while in the latest incident of similar atrocities, a 13-year-old girl in Ri-Bhoi district was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered by a 22-year-old man. These incidents have sparked widespread concern about law and order and child safety in the state.
Congress leader Badwar expressed disappointment at Tynsong’s handling of the situation, stating that his response showed a lack of understanding of the hardships faced by ordinary citizens.
He urged the government to adopt a comprehensive strategy that brings together multiple departments and community stakeholders to address the underlying social and economic factors contributing to such crimes.
Badwar emphasised that every child is entitled to a safe environment where they can live, play, and grow without fear.
He called for policies that foster social responsibility, community engagement, and support systems for vulnerable families, warning that piecemeal measures would fail to protect children.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Joplyn Scot Shylla highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures.
She urged the government to regulate online content accessible to children, including pornography, which she said can influence young minds and behaviour. Shylla also recommended introducing age-appropriate sex education in schools and encouraging open communication between parents and children.
The Mahila Congress leader further pointed out the gaps in public safety, noting that while some individuals benefit from personal security and secure transportation, many citizens, particularly children, remain exposed to crime. She called for the installation of CCTV cameras in public spaces and the strategic deployment of police personnel to ensure safer environments.
