SHILLONG, Oct 16: The full-length statue of Rev JJM Nichols Roy in front of Lariti, Mawdiangdiang, is reportedly at risk of collapsing as it has been installed over a wooden base.
Roy is widely revered as the architect of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The statue, sculpted by artistes from Riti Academy, was unveiled in August last year as a tribute to his immense contributions to the state and the region.
However, concerns have now emerged over the poor quality of its installation.
The statue currently rests on plywood boards, alongside a stone plaque bearing the names of Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, former Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh, former KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem, and former Deputy CEM Pynshngain N. Syiem, among other dignitaries. The plaque has already cracked and fallen to the ground, raising fears that the statue itself might soon collapse.
Questions are being raised about who will take responsibility should the structure collapse and whether the Department of Arts and Culture is ready to face this embarrassment.
