MAWKYRWAT, Oct 22: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar on Wednesday inspected the construction of the Water Treatment Plant under the Greater Mawkyrwat Combined Water Supply Scheme (GMCWSS) at Mawten village, as well as the dam at Wahsiej village. The project, implemented under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) at an estimated cost of ₹60 crore, aims to provide drinking water to eight villages in the Mawkyrwat area.
Speaking to media persons after visiting the Water Treatment Plant at Mawten, Tongkhar expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project, stating that only minor works such as plastering and painting remain, while most of the major components have been completed.
However, the MLA expressed concern over the delay in the release of funds by the Centre for JJM projects, which he said has hampered the implementation of several water schemes in Meghalaya and other parts of the country. He expressed hope that the funds would soon be released for the benefit of the general public.
Tongkhar urged contractors who have yet to complete their work to take responsibility and expedite progress so that water can be supplied to all eight villages — a development he described as a blessing for the residents of Mawkyrwat.
He also lauded officials of the PHE Department for setting a target to complete all works under the scheme within this year, expressing optimism that by the coming winter, all eight villages will have access to safe drinking water.
Also present during the inspection were Executive Engineer, PHE Mawkyrwat Division, K Nongbsaw, SDO, PHE Mawkyrwat Division, I Kharbudon, and other officials.
