Shillong, Oct 26: After a wait spanning 35 years, the long-cherished dream of the residents of Mawlai Nongpdeng has finally become a reality, with the long-pending road project officially sanctioned and ready for construction.
The residents are thrilled to see the project finally begin after a long wait.
A gathering was held at Kper Shiliang (Block B) on Saturday, where the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Nongpdeng received the work order for the road project. Construction is set to begin in the coming days.
The new 580-metre road will connect Block A to Block B, providing long-overdue motorable access for residents. Of the total stretch, 220 metres in Block A had been completed earlier, while the remaining 360 metres in Block B will now be constructed.
The project, sanctioned by the PWD (Roads) Department, is estimated to cost ₹4.5 crore.
During the gathering, residents and community leaders expressed their joy and relief, noting that the new road would ease daily commuting difficulties and improve connectivity within the area.
In his address, Rangbah Shnong Kitkupar Khashiing recalled that the village had sought assistance from several elected representatives over the years, but those efforts had yielded only unfulfilled promises.
“It was only after approaching former MDC Teiborlang Pathaw, who took up the matter with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, that the project was finally sanctioned,” Khashiing said.
He added that village leaders continued to follow up with department officials until the long-awaited work order was finally issued.
